i've just joined this list because i couldn't find a way to search the
archives, so if this question was asked before, please point me to that
i'll upgrade my computer with a new graphics card... i need fast 3d,
so my only choices are geforce 3/4 or radeon8500...
i know about nvidia's linux drivers...
but what's the status of the drivers for the radeon8500?
i'm especially interested in 3d...... are there opengl drivers for the
rad8500? are the new extensions supported ( like vertex/pixel shaders (
i know this is direct3d terminology :-)... in opengl they are.... vertex

no one has written hardware-3d drivers for the radeon8500 yet. a couple of
people are making noises about working on it, but I'm not holding my breath

The current plan is to implement working support for hardware tcl in
the original Radeon, then they'll add support for the 8500. The
original Radeon is mostly working at present - they're in the bug
fixing stage. So work should be starting on the 8500 driver
reasonably soon . . .=20
The developers have the docs they need, it's just a matter of
getting the time.
