Weird, I have never had problems with this. Which compiler version are

It's not necessarily a problem in the Savage driver. You replaced much
more than the Savage driver, so the problem may be just as likely be in
the X server or one of its extensions. Is there anything suspicious
in /var/log/Xorg.0.log? Please also send me that file.
Can you get a backtrace from the Xserver crash?
