Installation works without any problems that I can see. When I
restart x I loose all visuals (vsync blank?). I press ctrl+alt+bksp
but I still have no visual. I have no visual when I switch virtual
terminals either. I still have input control so I can reboot with the
three button salute. It's the only way I know how to get my console
back. I then restore x to the prior install.
I've checked the x log and It shows no errors only a warning about
xaa versions, which it loads then unloads and then loads a
(different?) version from a subdirectory. X then segfaults after
silken mouse is enabled. Any hints or anything else I can try? I can
post the log but I doubt it is of much use in this particular case.
Slackware 8+ kernel 2.4.18 preemptive patch. Ali chipset, radeon vivo
64 ddr (version QV?).

Agreed! 9/27 release of r200 is causing X server to crash on boot up
here as well. I went in and manually reverted to 9/21 and all is well
ATI Radeon 8500 64megs .. RH Linux 7.1, very up to date, Kernel=20
2.4.18-12.5, and XFree86-4.2.0-67.6
the XFree86 log says something about "caught Fatal Error 11, exiting"
after "Enabling silken mouse"
