Just had this somewhat wierd lockup now.
I was surfing with netrape and decided to change virtual screen with
1st I noticed that it didn't refresh the screen properly. then I tried to
open a root menu (which it almost did) and few other stuff worked until it
mouse moves but kbd does not do much anything.
I logged in from another machine and did gdb attach to XFree86
not much help since I had not compiled it with -g :( all that it shows is

probably not much of a help?
When I breaked the program execution moved mouse in the other machine and
continued execution the mouse refreshed it's position so something
then I killed all X programs one at the time (including window manager)
and X was stil left up (usually exits after wm has been killed)
normal kill didn't kill it but after -9 mouse didn't move any more.
after telinit 3;telinit5 I got myself a new login window but all virtual
consoles were gone. (and new X opeped on next free VC which was F8)
at this point I booted the machine for I have use for virtual consoles.
All this very much reminds me on the occasions that happened when I was
playing Unreal tournament on 3.3.6. Sudden freeze which could be fixed
with loggin on and killing X and in the process losing VC's in a was that
Alt+F1 would give you just X login in which you could not write anything.
Any hints on how to enable debugging symbols in X.
I know it's -g but in which file? (or does X has it's own something)
