I'm using Mandrake 9.0.  It's a fresh install.  I made the needed changes to the XF86Config. I don't know if they patched the kernel or not.  Should I try replacing it?

From your question I guess that you're using a kernel shipped with your
distribution. My situation is a lot different. I downloaded a kernel
from www.kernel.org and applied the ACPI patch myself before compiling
the kernel. Removing the patch actually means not applying it.

If you're using a kernel shipped with your distro it would be helpful to
know which distribution and which kernel version you're using. Maybe
some distributors include an ACPI patch in their kernels?
