Compiled XFree86 4.1.0 against linux 2.4.5, w/ matching
glibc 2.1.3.
Dual P3 1000 on an abit vp6

Everything seems ok, glxinfo reports good to go, direct
rendering enabled.

Any GL program displays as a yellow window, except
glplanet, which displays yellow with pink spots. HG2
demo shows some vertical stripes of scenery if I flip
virtual consoles a few times.

No errors anywhere, no crashes, no blood, no Dallas,
Nothing! Help.

Software rendering works fine.

I seem to recall seeing that once ago. Either the card was
    defective
or it wasn't fully seated in the AGP slot. Is your card
    known to
    work correctly, perhaps with Windows?

I have the same problem with a ati rage128 fury.
    Intel-P3-700Mhz
    linux-2.4.5
xfree-4.1.0 gives me a yellow screen with quake3.
2d overlay things like "health meter" and "ammo meter" in
quake3 will be drawn correctly, but anything 3d will be yellow.
when I go back to xfree-4.0.3 the problem goes away and
everything will be drawn correctly again.
at first I thought it might be drm out of 0.7 drivers I
    compiled a while ago.
but I cleaned up my modules directory (rm'ed it) and
recompiled my kernel with drm that comes with linux-2.4.5
    this didn't fix it either.
I pretty sure this is not hardware related.

I think I found the solution, at least this one worked for me.
I compiled the r128.o module from the xfree-4.1.0 source.

    xc/programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/os-support/linux/drm/kernel

    and moved it to:
    /lib/modules/2.4.5/kernel/drivers/char/drm/r128.o

so I guess dri doesn't work ok with the drm r128.o module that
    comes with linux-2.4.5

I can confirm that zyphr's solution worked for me. My ATI
Rage Pro was giving only yellow screens for glxgears (DRI
    enabled, XFree86 4.1.0, kernel 2.4.5) until I recompiled the
kernel module from the 4.1.0 source tree. Works beautifully
    now.
