I have a home P3/933 box with an i810 motherboard
chipset. I greatly looked forward to installing your
software and finally having some kind of hardware
rendering (even though the 810 isn't the greatest
onboard video ever). However, every phase of
installation was plagued with bugs.

1. Installation:
Post-install, the libraries were linked incorrectly,
leaving me with a non-functional X server. It was
easily fixed with a couple of symlinks, but this was
quite annoying.

2. Running OpenGL programs:
After the symlinking, I ran gears to test out my new
hardware acceleration. It ran at a measly 10 fps (by
my estimation, because the -fps option didn't work).
My box, being a P3 and having SSE, ran it with software
acceleration at twice the speed. Morph3d ran at a
constant 5 fps, whereas it ran smoothly at 15 fps
before.

Moving on to games, I next tried Tux Racer. Filled
with weird speculars and miscolored graphic elements,
it only yielded (I am not joking in the slightest) 1/3
fps, if that. Thinking that the complex graphics were
too much for the driver, I started BZFlag, only to have
it segfault, taking the whole X server with it. In
some cases (I duplicated this 5 times, 2 each with a
2.4.2 and 2.4.4 kernel and one from a boot disk), it
also froze the kernel, rendering the system so
braindead that I couldn't save it with the Magic SysRq
key.

3. Deinstallation:
Your uninstall program left behind the kernel module,
not to mention the new libGL/GLU. I had to reinstall
XF86 from my binaries and recompile my kernel to get
them back.

I like the idea of 3D acceleration on the i810 chipset
for Linux, but your attempt is so badly executed, I'm
tempted to go back to WinME just to escape the problems
your software has left me with.

Please check out the documentation section on
http://dri.sourceforge.net. It sounds like you had a bad
installation, or there were bugs in the install scripts with
your setup. Binary releases of the DRI are a relatively new
thing, and some of the install scripts might not be perfect.
That being said there are tons of troubleshooting
suggestions listed in the DRI user/build documentation. We
can help you narrow down the problem if we have some more
    information.

I did look at the documentation first, and the fact that I
did was the only thing that enabled me to be able to install
the software in the first place. I can't afford the connect
    time (I have a free ISP, but I can't spend 15 hours
downloading it) to download the entire X tree off your CVS
server, and my kernel (2.4.4) requires at least XFree86
4.0.2 (kernel requires a certain version of kudzu (because
earlier versions of kudzu conflict with PnP support), kudzu
requires a certain version of Xconfigurator, Xconfigurator
requires XFree 4.0.2+). I'll try to reinstall your driver
and get my XFree logs. Thank you for your prompt reply.

I just upgraded to version 0.7, and, man, was I wrong. With
hardware acceleration enabled, I get 45 fps in BZFlag at
highest quality, 23 in Tux Racer (although Tux is still way
too shiny), and the GL screensavers run like water. Wow!
There's only one word for your new drivers -- amazing.
Thanks, and I'm sorry for jumping to conclusions. 8-)
