Is it possible to configure drbl to boot certain clients into clonezilla-live images (to get different kernel hardware support) while defaulting to clonezilla-box mode for everything else?

Not really.
However, it will be very easier for you to switch with command "dcs", and drbl-ocs-live-prep. isn't it?
Steven.

Our use is exclusively unicast cloning but we sometimes have a few instances running at once. Currently we boot the things that don't work with the stock kernel in clonezilla-box mode from a recent clonezilla-live iso and connect to the same image storage. I just thought it might be handier if we could configure a client at a specified MAC address to PXE boot into the live image without changing our defaults. But, since our server is a VM and the cloning is done nearby, it might be even easier to keep 2 different instances running and choose by plugging into the appropriate switch.

Sure! It's easier to use 2 VM servers…
