I tried to use clonezilla to make a backup of my windows 7 pro machine on a USB pendrive. It is an HP DC7900 with 8 gb of ram.
With every try I ended up with an error issued by PARTCLONE. "read ERROR:Object is remote"
See below for a detailed description.
Yes I did use the TO RAM option and no the USB pendrive is not at fault and has enough free space.
    What am I doing wrong?

    detailed description of procedings

I used a USB stick (pen drive) of 32 GB to create a version of Clonezilla live. I used Lili to dreate the stick and the
"clonezilla-live-20160627-xenial-amd64.iso" image file. Formatted as FAT32, no frills like hidden files or windows boottable,

First I tried to create a backup on the pendrive (Disk to Image). As stated in the FAQ I used the "TO RAM" mode of clonezilla. All went well. I used the pendrive as the directory to store the backup. The pendrive has enough free space. When validating the backup I got a read error "read ERROR:Object is remote". (the pendrive is NOT at fault; see below)

I then created the backup on a local SATA drive. After that I booted windows, checksummed all the files (with XFile, great program!), copied the backup directory to the pendrive and checksummed the files on the pendrive, All files passed. So the backup files on the SATA drive and the USB pen drive are exactly the same.
There was more than 8GB of free space left on the pen-drive.

I then booted Clonezilla Live again with the TO RAM option and entered the "check for restorable image" mode. (mode can be named differently, do not remember exactly).
The image on the SATA drive tested OK.
The image on the pendrive gave the "read ERROR:Object is remote" error. The strange thing is that this ERROR was in the PARTCLONE.LOG and not in the CLONEZILLA.LOG

    What am I doing wrong?

Could you please take a photo about the whole error messages on the screen then post it? It's easier for us to understand that.
    Thanks.

Ok, I made some screenshots (literally...) and now I have some .JPG files detailing the error
(the text I quoted in the first message is correct to the letter including case).
edit: somehow I cannot get this forum to display the images I posted on IMGUR

I used the ToRAM mode of clonezilla

    1. Clonezilla showed this drivelist

    2. the drive selection screen

    3. I selected the check image function

    4. on the USB stick there is only one image

    5. at the second part of the image checking clonezilla (parted) shows THIS error

    6. I also "CATed" the contents of PARTCLONE.LOG and CLONEZILLA.LOG

    hope this helps

Well somehow this forum dumped the images. I used the "picture ICON and provided links to IMGUR
Now I will try to attach them.

I know that in the error (picture 6) it says the image on the USB drive is broken. But it is not. The image on the USB drive is an exact copy of the image residing on a local SATA drive.
I used XFile to confirm those images are exactly the same.
If I use CloneZilla to check the image on the SATA drive then it says that image is okay.

    hope this helps

Could you please do some more tests, like:
    1. Before you clonezilla job, enter console, and edit the file /etc/drbl/drbl-ocs.conf
    2. Change the value for "-z" to smaller, originally it is:
    PARTCLONE_RESTORE_OPT_INIT="-z 10485760"
    Change it like:
    PARTCLONE_RESTORE_OPT_INIT="-z 1048576"

    1. Then run image restoring or checking again. To see if any difference.
Please let us know the results.
      Thanks.
