DP has been hosted at SourceForge since 2002. We moved from CVS to git in 2015 but stayed with SF since we had such rich history there. Sadly, SF has become more and more painful to use over the past few years and their git support has been somewhat lacking compared to major players like github.com <http://github.com/>. Since SF's move to a new datacenter last month, merge requests have become almost completely unusable. After some discussion, we've moved the dproofreaders project from SourceForge to github.com <http://github.com/>. You can find the code at https://github.com/DistributedProofreaders/dproofreaders <https://github.com/DistributedProofreaders/dproofreaders> The DP Code Development pages in the wiki (https://www.pgdp.net/wiki/DP_Code_Development <https://www.pgdp.net/wiki/DP_Code_Development>) have been updated to reflect this. I've created an SF to github.com <http://github.com/> migration page to walk people through the process of updating their local repos to point to github.com if they are not already familiar with it: https://www.pgdp.net/wiki/DP_Code_Migration <https://www.pgdp.net/wiki/DP_Code_Migration> One downside is that github.com <http://github.com/> does not support mailing lists, such as this one. Instead I encourage you to visit the DP Site Code forum at pgdp.net <http://pgdp.net/> (https://www.pgdp.net/phpBB3/viewforum.php?f=32 <https://www.pgdp.net/phpBB3/viewforum.php?f=32>) or our Slack channel (https://www.pgdp.net/wiki/DP_Code_Development#Communicating <https://www.pgdp.net/wiki/DP_Code_Development#Communicating>) for development discussions. You can watch the project at github.com <http://github.com/> to be notified of project activity such as pull requests. Please let me know if you have any questions and happy coding! -- Casey |

Howdy DP developers! The DP code has used the mysql PHP extension since it's inception in 2000. PHP deprecated that extension in 2004 at the release of PHP 5.0 in preference to the mysqli extension (notice the trailing i). In PHP 7.0 the mysql extension was removed entirely. To support PHP 7.0 we need to change the DP code to use the mysqli extension. I've done the code changes and you can see the open MR at https://sourceforge.net/p/dproofreaders/git/merge-requests/96/ <https://sourceforge.net/p/dproofreaders/git/merge-requests/96/> Note that my objective was to get us to working with PHP 7.0 with as little thrashing as possible. To that end, I did an almost straight replacement from mysql_* to mysqli_* using a singleton class so as to not rely on a global variable for the database connection. This was much less effort than moving us to a DB abstraction layer. The code is live on the TEST server at http://www.pgdp.org/c and over the next week we'll be validating that I didn't screw anything up in the conversion. If you have questions or comments you can leave them on the MR, in the topic discussing it at https://www.pgdp.net/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=32&t=63652 <https://www.pgdp.net/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=32&t=63652>, or email me directly. Today I updated the version of phpBB running on TEST from 3.0 to 3.2, in preparation for eventually doing the same at pgdp.net <http://pgpd.net/> (likely in June). In order for your sandboxes on the TEST to use this new version, including logging in, you will need to update your sandboxes. See the following section in the wiki for instructions on doing so: https://www.pgdp.net/wiki/DP_Code_Development_Using_git#Refreshing_your_fork <https://www.pgdp.net/wiki/DP_Code_Development_Using_git#Refreshing_your_fork> Cheers, -- Casey |

In preparation for upgrading the OS on pgdp.net, we've upgraded the OS version on the TEST server to Ubuntu 14.04. This should be generally transparent for any of your activities on TEST. Note that this gets us to PHP version 5.5.9. TEST is now using SSL and secure cookies. These required changes in the site_vars.php & site_vars.php.template files and it's recommended that you update the configuration in your sandbox to have it use https:// connections and secure cookies. This is best done by updating your fork and re-running the configure script. See https://www.pgdp.net/wiki/DP_Code_Development_Using_git#Refreshing_your_fork <https://www.pgdp.net/wiki/DP_Code_Development_Using_git#Refreshing_your_fork> I've released a new development VM: dp-devel-VM-20170218. This one is running Ubuntu 14.04 and the latest version of the DP code. You can get it at https://www.pgdp.net/wiki/DP_Code_Development_VM <https://www.pgdp.net/wiki/DP_Code_Development_VM> This version also fixes errors where the dp_db database was created using the UTF-8 charset (it now uses Latin1). While it is possible to update your existing VM (as root: apt-get install update-manager-core; do-release-upgrade) you will need to do some Apache and PHP configuration tweaks as well, so using a new VM may be simpler. -- Casey |

A reminder that after you refresh your sandbox you'll need to run SETUP/configure on it to update site_vars.php from the template. The old site_vars.php does the magic quotes detection at the end of it which is no longer needed. If you don't re-run SETUP/configure you'll get this message: > Error: magic_quotes_gpc is not turned on in PHP configuration. -- Casey > On Nov 4, 2016, at 4:09 PM, Casey Peel <cp...@ke...> wrote: > > Today I merged the remove_magic_quotes branch into master and TEST is running this code. Today I merged the remove_magic_quotes branch into master and TEST is running this code. Now would be a good time to update the code in your sandbox by refreshing your fork so that it works with magic quotes disabled. Greetings DP developers! We are ready to begin the final steps in integrating the remove_magic_quotes branch into master. This branch removes the code dependency on the deprecated magic_quotes feature in PHP 5.3. This is required in order to support PHP 5.4 and later. We'll be deploying the remove_magic_quotes branch to TEST at http://www.pgdp.net/c on October 1-2. The code in this branch works if magic_quotes is enabled or disabled. Some folks from pgdp.net will be doing testing over the month of October as we iron out any remaining issues. We expect to be deploying the code to PROD sometime in November. On October 22nd we'll be disabling magic_quotes in TEST. Apologies for the delay. The migration to the new TEST server completed successfully a week and a half ago, but we had some challenges coordinating with TIA to get the DNS updated. The DNS for www.pgdp.org has been updated this morning to point to the new location (vpgdp01.fnf.archive.org) but may take a while to propagate. The old test server (pgdp01.us.archive.org) should be accessible until the end of the month but is locked down to only DP site admins. Some important things to note: The new TEST server is running Ubuntu 12.04, which is one LTS version later than the old TEST server (10.04). Things should work seamlessly, but if you have problems let us know. The contents of your home directory have been moved over via rsync, which maintained the proper ownership and permissions. Access to the new TEST server is the same as the old TEST server: via SSH keys. Your prior keys were retained and you should be able to access the new TEST server via ssh. Accounts were set up with random passwords (since you don't need them to log in). If you do find you need one, such as to use sudo, please contact myself, jmdyck, or donovan and we can create an initial password for you. When you SSH into the box you are likely to get a warning that the cryptographic fingerprint has changed for www.pgdp.org. This is a valid warning since the server behind the www.pgdp.org domain has changed. To remove the old fingerprint from your known_hosts file on your Linux or Mac OSX workstation, run: ssh-keygen -R www.pgdp.org The base htdocs directory has moved from /0/data/htdocs to /var/www/htdocs. You may need to update any scripts or aliases that point to the old location. Code in your sandboxes will not work correctly until you update your configuration.sh script and reconfigure your sandbox. You can do so by: cd ~/public_html/<sandbox_name> ./SETUP/configure ~cpeel/bin/TEST_setup.sh . If you have questions or problems with the new TEST server, you can contact me via email or in the pgdpdev Slack channel. The TEST server (www.pgdp.org) is currently hosted by The Internet Archive (TIA). They are moving datacenters and have asked us to migrate our content from the antiquated physical hardware to a new virtual machine hosted in their infrastructure. We are working to get the new machine set up and the data copied over. We have until June 1st to make this move. All of your existing data, including login keys, will be retained. Starting Monday, May 16th we will be locking down access to the current test server while we do a final data migration. We hope to have the new server brought entirely online and accessible by Wednesday, May 18th. I'll send out an email with a status update when we're moved over. I am running a 'git bootcamp' training demo/class for how to get started doing some basic git development. This would include things like creating a git branch, making changes, committing those changes, doing a rebase of those changes, pushing those changes up to the repo, and opening a merge request. If this is of interest to you, please see http://www.pgdp.net/wiki/User:Cpeel/git_bootcamp to see the agenda and a link you can use to indicate which of the proposed times is good for you (it's likely there will be more than one since we have developers from all over the world). -- Casey |

Glad to be here :) Yes, please set me up with a Slack account for this email (soc...@wa...). Welcome to DP, Walter! There are actually many different ways to become involved in the coding side of DP. You've clearly found the Dev VM page which is a great start. Hello out there... My name is Walter and I go by the userid WalterAM in Distributed Proofreaders. I am a mostly self-taught programmer. PHP and MySQL are two languages I spend most of my time programming in (along with Python and Micosoft VBA). I also like to do documentation, writing, and troubleshooting. I spent a few minutes trying to get the Test VM to run in Oracle VM VirtualBox but am running in to a snag; I'll work more on it when I get a chance. I... I... I... so... how can I help YOU? One of the challenges with doing DP development has always been getting a system set up with all the dependencies (PHP, MySQL, phpBB, jpgraph, etc) and some data in the database to make it usable. This is why we have the TEST server, which is nice but places some restrictions on what kind of development can happen (no massive changes to the database since it will impact everyone on the server) and requires internet connectivity to use. Now you can download a copy of the new DP development virtual machine and do development from anywhere: http://www.pgdp.net/wiki/DP_Code_Development_VM This VM contains a fully-functional version of the newly-released R201601 code (via read-only git checkout), predefined admin/pm/proofer DP accounts, and a trial project loaded and ready to proof. The /home/developer/README.txt includes detailed information about the system account, DP code accounts, and how to create your own user in the VM to do development. See the above URL for more information about VM requirements, etc. Inquire within the pgdpdev slack room if you encounter problems or have questions. -- Casey |

I've created a pgdp slack team to allow pgdpdev discussions to take place. If you're not aware, Slack is a communication took much like Jabber conference rooms or IRC channels of old, but persists anything said in the channel even if you're not connected. It has both web, desktop, and mobile interfaces. We're trying this out as a possible replacement for the current pgdpdev jabber room. Everyone is welcome to join, but slack requires that you be invited to the team. If you'd like an invitation, please let me know what email address to invite. Cheers, -- Casey |
