Hello, We've run into problems while trying to instrument an application with DPCL. The attached code works in 32-bit mode, but dies in 64-bit mode at bcreate (ASC_failure). We've tried to use listmod but the problem persists. Our environment is an AIX 5.3/Pwr 5 machine, with DPCL v3.4.2.0 and we're compiling with: IBM XL Fortran Enterprise Edition V10.1 for AIX Version: 10.01.0000.0007 Do you have any clue about what could be happening? Thank you, German |

DPCL 3.4.4 for AIX is available for download. This release fixes the following bug: 1736659 - DPCL hang after processing create and terminate for parallel application on Power 4 systems with AIX bos.mp 5.3.0.60 installed. If this fix is not installed, you can work around the problem by manually killing the dpcld (and sesmgr PE Benchmarker process) owned by your userid Dave |

We have updated the DPCL source in our CVS repository to include this
change. If you build from DPCL source using either the default code branch
or using the v34_current tag, you will have this fix included. This will be
incuded in our next DPCL release as well, although we do not have a planned
target date for builing a release at this time.

[Dpcl-user] dpcl patch in 64 bit

Hello,
some time ago we received a patch from Dave Wootton to change the
default
type of a parameter if the probe module was not compiled with -g. ( I
attach the
mail with his answer ).
Since then, we must provide this patch to our users who want to run 64bit
applications with our DPCL tracing facility because we really need this
change.
So, is there any chance to put this patch in your repository and be the
default
behaviour in the future releases?
Thank you,

Re: [Dpcl-user] MPI routine call parameters on a 64-bit MPI application

Yes, the problem is easily reproduced. The root cause of the problem is
that
when a probe module is compiled without the -g option, we have to assume
default
types for parameters to the functions in the probe module, and we had been
defaulting to integer data type. In 64 bit mode, sizeof(int) is 4 bytes and
sizeof(void *) is 8 bytes, so we were truncating the pointer, resulting in
the
sigsegv. The source file I am attaching to this email gets around the
immediate
problem by changing the default parameter type to pointer, which will have
the
correct size in 32 and 64 bit mode.
This is based off the latest (v325) level code in our cvs repository. If
you are
using a different level, you may need to reconcile the code. The module
goes in
the src/dyninstAPI/src/os/aix directory.
The ultimate solution needs more work, as we need to worry about checking
data
types when probe modules are compiled with -g, and also need to look closer
at
the default parameter type and when it should be integer or pointer.
Also note that if you compile the probe module with -g now, you will have
type
mismatch errors when installing and activating probes. That's part of what
needs
to be addressed by the final fix.

Hi DPCL does not provide any way to obtain process exit status for processes that it attaches to, so would not work for what you propose. DPCL is also probably far too 'heavyweight' for using just as a process termination monitor since when DPCL attaches to a process, it parses the executable looking for symbol table information and builds data structures in memory representing the structure of each process that it loads. You might be able to accomplish what you want by using ptrace to attach to each process, assuming that you have permission to attach to those processes (your userid owns the process or your userid is root). Once you attach, you need to resume execution, then write code which polls for exit status when your process is notified that one of the processes you connected to via ptrace has terminated. DPCL 3.4.3 is now available for download from the DPCL project download page (http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=128800). The files contained in this release are listed under the DPCL production releases category. This release fixes a couple problems which have been reported since the v342 release. Dave |

Sorry, I should have replied to the list when I answered Harald. The cause
for the error was that he did not have the dpclSD service configured
properly in his /etc/inetd.conf file (AIX uses inetd while Linux uses
xinetd).
Thanks for looking at this.

ASC_daisd_cant_sock
This error message firmly indicates that the network has connectivity
issues, most likely that the '/etc/services' file is improperly configured
and the DPCL SuperDaemon service is not functional. Also, DPCL uses the
Linux 'ruserok' security mechanism and if the call to 'ruserok' fails,
then this error might appear. It would indicate a problem with the user's
'.rhosts' file or the '/etc/hosts.equiv' file. See the *man page for
'ruserok'. documented in the man page.

Hello,
I'm working with DPCL on a Pwr5 machine with DPCL 3.4.2 and AIX 5.2. I'm
getting ASC_daisd_cant_sock error as a result of a bcreate call.
On the DPCL Class reference ASC_daisd_cant_sock is interpreted like "a
unix
connect() call failed". Does anyone how to solve this, or how can I get
more
information about this error?
Regards,

The consciousness of AC encompassed all of what had once been a Universe
and brooded over what was now Chaos. Step by step, it must be done.
And AC said, "LET THERE BE LIGHT!"
And there was light.

Harold,
This is what we have in our documentation about this error.
Hope this points you in the right direction. Our usage and documentation is
aimed more at Linux, so beware of that.
Thanks,
Jim G.
*ASC_daisd_cant_sock*
This error message firmly indicates that the network has
connectivity issues, most likely that the '/etc/services' file is
improperly configured and the DPCL SuperDaemon service is not
functional. Also, DPCL uses the Linux 'ruserok' security mechanism
and if the call to 'ruserok' fails, then this error might appear. It
would indicate a problem with the user's '.rhosts' file or the
'/etc/hosts.equiv' file. See the *man page for 'ruserok'. documented
in the man page.
