Andreas,

I did a quick test with a number of versions (on windows with a .c file):
- 1.8.6: warning: Unsupported symbol ² found
  x^2 is not a supported text, it is supported however inside formulas.rest
shown
- 1.8.7 and 1.8.8 everything is shown properly

So I don't see what is not working, if the problem is present please make a
small example including the used Doxyfile.
