I was trying to swap the ctrl key with the fn key but got stuck halfway. I could make the fn key work as ctrl but then could not map any key to work as fn. So I tried to reset the preferences (removed all mappings) and even uninstalled DoubleCommand but I cannot get my fn key to work again. It is completely dead.
How can I get my fn key back?
Thanks!

OK, I downloaded that latest uninstall script, made it executable and ran it. The Fn key was still dead. So I rebooted and still the key does nothing. Is there anything else I can try?

One more clue - on the Keyboard Preferences panel, it does not matter if I tick the "Use all F1…" box or not. The special function keys such as volume do not work with it on or off. More importantly, I cannot do a forward delete without the Fn key.

More info: I am using an Apple wireless keyboard and Leopard. The uninstall script ran successfully after asking for my password. Every other key seems to work fine except Fn. The Keyboard Viewer shows no response when pressing the Fn key.

Well, if you've run that script I'm not sure how DoubleCommand can still be involved. Have you restarted after running it? That might be required to remove any kext caches. If you run kextstat, does anything related to DoubleCommand show? DoubleCommand won't do anything to your keyboard or computer, once the software is removed by that script, there should be no trace of it left at all.

Sorry, I found the problem and it was unrelated to DoubleCommand. It is a new wireless keyboard and I had to install an update to get the extra function keys to work. I was thrown by the fact that DoubleCommand was able to use the function key so I assumed it was working before. Thanks for your help!

Here's a basic Double Command question that is unrelated to what I am replying to here: How do I actually USE the Double Command software? I downloaded it (I think) but I cannot find any screens that do anything, just a variety of text pages and images. Every time I click on the Double Command icon in Finder, it just reinstalls. I want to remap the fn key as the control key, but I can't figure out how to do that (or anything).
Thanks.

To completely remove DoubleCommand use the following script: http://github.com/mbaltaks/doublecommand/raw/master/dist/DoubleCommand/uninstall.command

Never mind. I found the program in the Systems Preferences folder and it works fine…
