Why Gnuplot and not Matplotlib? Matplotlib is Python, and thereforr much easier to integrate. The Python scientific community strongly encourages users to use MatPlotLib. By the way, the SVN version of MatPlotLib as a LaTeX-like renderer that does an amzing job of maching LaTeX's output. That might come in handy to provide LaTeX functionnality without requiring LaTeX.
