    All,

I first installed this software last night and version 1.8 of Java was installed by the installer file and about an hour later the Java running in the system tray told me an update was available and the updated version was not 2.0 it was actually version 8! Anyway, the upgrade removed the older out of date version of Java and when that happened it killed DocFetcher. The software simply wouldn't run anymore until I uninstalled the new version of Java and reinstalled the old version of Java that came with the software.

FROM Bing Chat: Java 1.8 is also known as Java 8. It was released on March 18, 2014 So it is about 9 years old as of 2023.

Anyone know what is going on and what the remedy is for this? That is really old code.

My searches in the forum have educated me that this has been a problem with the software program for many years.

Is there a fix coming possibly?

I'm running Windows 10. This works for me:

    1) Install the Java runtime from java.com. I installed Java 8 Update 381, 64-bit.
    2) Install DocFetcher 1.1.25.

The Java runtime downloaded by the DocFetcher installer is out of date, don't let it install that. Install the newest Java runtime first, then install DocFetcher.

      THANK YOU!!

Your suggestion worked. I completely removed the software and Java then rebooted then installed the new Java prior to reinstalling the software and it correctly skipped the installation of the outdated software so the program is working on the new version of Java.

Do you know if this project is under development still by anybody? If the bundled software is nine years old that's not good. That means nobody's recompiled the software with an updated version of Java in almost a decade.

      Thanks.

I'm the developer. The project is not being actively developed anymore (= no new features), but bugfixes are planned for the future. Addition of new features continues in the commercial products DocFetcher Pro and DocFetcher Server: https://docfetcherpro.com/

The Java version that DocFetcher 1.1.25 tries to download is Java 8 Update 111, which apparently was released around 2016, not 2014. That's still old, but note that DocFetcher 1.1.25 itself was released in 2021, which is not that long ago. The reason why the Java version wasn't updated is that doing so came with the risk of breaking stuff. But yes, when DocFetcher 1.1.26 comes out, it should use a new Java version.

For anyone still affected by these issues, please try upgrading to DocFetcher 1.1.26, which comes with its own Java runtime as well as code signing.
