Hello,

I am using DocBook for five years now and will soon switch from 4.2 to 5. While I do appreciate that there are some useful new global attributes for distinguishing specific content variations (e.g. audience), one is still missing: DB for distinguishing between different databases. Of course I can continue (ab)using another attribute, but if there are special ones one for computer vendors and chip architecture, why not for DB systems?

Thank you and greetings,

Michael

Many of the common effectivity attribute are historical/legacy names. Several years ago, it became clear that there was a nearly endless list of possible values. We added a general "condition" attribute at that time, one without specific semantics.

We might be persuaded to add more, but I think there will be some reluctance.

    Apologies for the long delay..

The committee considered this request but felt that the condition attribute could handle this, as it is a general purpose effectivity attribute. The committee is reluctant to add more specialized effectivity attributes.

There's nothing that makes architecture a priori more important than database systems, but on those grounds there's probably an endless list of possible effectivity attributes.

Hopefully condition can be used to suit your purpose (or, of course, you can extend DocBook).
