i've been playing with html vs. xhtml output for some
time. internet explorer has problems with short versions
of empty elements, <element />, like in <a id="..."/>, in
xhtml output. it can be clearly seen if you assign some
color styling to <a> elements - IE colors the folowing
elements as well. while mozilla firefox seems to handle
simple cases of such elements ok, i also have examples
of xhtml docbook outputs where it fails.

this is of course not a problem of dockbook xsl, i guess
it's saxon that produces short versions of elements for
xhtml, as the xsls for <a id=.../> tags look the same
both for html and xhtml (yet for html saxon produces an
old-style closing tag </a>)

question is, is there any way to tweak saxon to stop
producing short empty elements? if not, xhtml output's
usability is limited, while browsers don't fully support
xhtml.
