I am working on adapting/modifying dk-milter, and would like to use gdb
to debug it while in development. I am having trouble getting debugging
symbols included in the binaries (both libdk and dk-filter). Building with
variant=debug seems to have no effect. I am using the DKDEBUG environment
variable to get some output to syslog, but it would be much more helpful if
I could set breakpoints, step through code, get a useful backtrace, etc.
Please let me know if you have any idea on how to get debugging symbols
and/or alternate recommendations for debugging segfaults and such.

In Makefile.m4 for libar, libdk and dk-filter, add this line:
...just after the "include" lines you see at the top, and recompile.
This forces -g mode for all builds, so you can just do "sh Build -c"
without other options.
