Hello, this is grate, that you opened your product, but I think you need to make one more step - relicense it under terms of GPL. All argumentation is on http://djvulibre.djvuzone.org/gsdjvu.html site. I completly agree with them. -- Vasily Levin |

Hi, Someone requested a gentoo ebuild for gsdjvu (see http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=107342). If you're not familiar with it, it's a small script in a bash-like language that describes how to download and compile a piece of software. However, according to the COPYING file, there seemed to be pretty big difficulties with its licence, and the gentoo team would like to be sure about being right to provide such an ebuild. As no binary file is redistributed, we think it should be ok but we'd like to hear it from you :) Regards, Alexandre |

Dear Sir/Madam, Thank you very much for providing us with GSDjVu under the Common public license. This will go a long way, in making DjVu a more widely adopted format for electronic documentation. I am sure AT & T's contribution in this regard will always be appreciated. However due to legal technicalities that I am not competent to comment upon the Free Software Foundation has decreed the CPL as being incompatible with the GPL even though they consider it a genuine "free" (as in freedom) license. This prevents linux developers from packaging GSDjVu for instance with Ghostscript in many linux distributions. This is particularly the case with linux distributions such as Debian GNU/Linux that insist on honoring all license and copyright requirements of software developers. I am hence writing to request you to kindly help us bridge this impasse. I am sure you knowledgeble staff would be able to find a way around this problem, on realising its importance. Thanking you sincerely Balbir Thomas |

In summary, Dave says that AT&T is not allowed to distribute its own source code under the licence it chooses because the only and intended use of this source code is to be linked against a GPL'd program (Ghostscript not Ghostview). Maybe this argument can convince AT&T to release under the GPL instead of the CPL. However I am not the right person to make this point. I do not have the legal credentials for making such a technical point. - L. More info below. I speculate that the coming AT&T-SBC merger keep them extremely busy. - Leon Bottou ---------- Forwarded Message ---------- Subject: RE: GSDjVu Date: Friday 08 July 2005 12:25 pm From: "Sommer, Joseph M, ALABS" Sorry Dylan, time and resources do not permit us to do more at this time. -----Original Message----- From: Dylan Thurston Sent: Friday, July 08, 2005 12:13 PM To: Sommer, Joseph M, ALABS; Frost, Thomas F (Tom), ALABS Subject: GSDjVu Dear Joe Sommer and Tom Frost, I would first like to thank you for your great work in getting GSDjVu released under a free software license. It's a great tool that I use frequently. I'd also like to ask you to continue the work and try to get GSDjVu released under the GPL; while the CPL is a fine license, it is unfortunately incompatible with the GPL, and GSDjVu relies on GhostScript for its operation. Since GhostScript is released on the GPL, this greatly diminishes its use; surely if you are to release GSDjVu under a free license, it makes sense to release it under a license that would make it possible to use it. Alternatively, you could add clauses to your release that would remove the specific restrictions in the CPL that make it incompatible with the GPL. If it would be useful, I would be happy to assist in finding out exactly what these points of incompatibility are. Sincerely yours, Dylan Thurston Benjamin Peirce Assistant Professor of Mathematics Harvard University ------------------------------------------------------- |

Happy to hear of your progress with DjVu. Unfortunately I would not plan on seeing AT&T make a release using GPL in the foreseeable future. Joe -----Original Message----- From: Barak Pearlmutter [mailto:ba...@cs...]=20 Sent: Thursday, July 07, 2005 6:43 PM To: Sommer, Joseph M, ALABS; Frost, Thomas F (Tom), ALABS Cc: djv...@li... Subject: gsdjvu Hi, I'm the Debian developer responsible for packaging the djvu suite for Debian. You may not be aware of this, but Debian is the only distribution of GNU/Linux that actually ships with djvu out of the box, with the package on our official CDROMs. It is correctly integrated into the rest of the system via mime types, the browser plugins "just work" with no manual configuration, etc. One constant request I've gotten from my users is to include some good compressors, so people can transform PDFs and Postscript files to djvu conveniently. So I was very happy to hear that AT&T released gsdjvu under a free license. I know that the intent in doing this was to have the code included and working in things like the Debian djvu packages. Unfortunately, due to a silly license incompatibility, it looks like Debian is legally prevented from actually integrating gsdjvu into our ghostscript package (which is actually named gs-gpl). So we can't make the process turn-key so when users install things the gsdjvu stuff "just works" and provides its functionality. Instead we could tell our users to download and recompile etc etc. But the sort of defeats the purpose - we try to make things "just work". So of course, I'm hoping you might be able to release gsdjvu under a "GPL compatible" license, like the GPL or a dual license CPL/GPL. This would allow us to actually integrate the code into our distribution in the fashion that is best for our users, and that would best encourage use of this technology. Thanks for your consideration, and thanks again for getting gsdjvu released under a free license. Yours Truly, Barak Pearlmutter <ba...@de...> -- Prof Barak A.
