I highly second that! Cineform is a viable alternative to ProRes and DNxHD AND it is available as Open Source under either MIT or Apache 2.0 Licence. Here: https://gopro.github.io/cineform-sdk/
For Instance It's the Intermadiate Format of Choice for Adobe CC Suite.
