Hopefully you don't feel the time was totally wasted. I work with a little Python applet and finally bit the bullet to move it from the Message Tray in Gnome Shell back to the System Status Area where it belongs. Long story short I get the extension written and working and kicked back to admire it sitting in the top right where it belongs on my Fedora 16. Then I foolishly test it by installing Gnome Shell 3.4 (16 has 3.2) on my Ubuntu Precise and the applet won't auto-start! Commence with the hair pulling. A bug? A change in 3.4? Do I install Fedora 17 to rule out a Ubuntu bug? More on topic I started to write a HOW TO for Fedora a few months ago thinking I could emulate the Ubuntu HOW TO: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1946486 With a Debian kernel you can take a short cut, if you don't mind a little risk. Unfortunately it didn't work in 15 or 16, I don't remember which. That's because the Fedora kernel team in the kernel .config file had made a module you need free-standing a built-in. So no go. Maybe that's been changed with 17, I haven't looked. So I decided against finishing the HOW TO because I'd be duplicating the link you cite. In short when I was looking that seemed like the best RPM guide I could find at the time. If there is a better one I don't know of it. Nick's taking a break right now. It may be two weeks or longer before he'd be able to compile a Fedora kernel for you. Favux |
