Well it seems Mint mounts it with permissions preventing non-root access.
As probably Ubuntu does. I should've remembered it, it's quite logical.
So, yes you need root.

Please send me the output of this one:

sudo sh -c 'cat /sys/kernel/debug/hid/0003:0458:500F.*/rdesc'

Also, could you please send me a sample of the following command output:

sudo sh - c 'cat /sys/kernel/debug/hid/0003:0458:500F.*/events'

while you're doing a stroke with the pen on the tablet surface?
