Thanks for opening a ticket on this, Cean. The other user on mozilla's add-on page (Motsobu) was talking about Firefox 5, not Firefox 50 (the post is from 2011). I fixed that long ago. As far as I know, you're the only one to report a problem with FF50. It might be you're the first to upgrade to FF50, or there might be something special about your environment/configuration.

At some point, Firefox is going to enable Multiprocess Firefox, but the only incompatibility that I'm aware of is that the popup box doesn't resize itself to fit the content. However the default size is pretty good and there's a bug on this in the Mozilla database. I don't think there's anything Dict can do about the resize problem without a major rewrite.

Anyway, I'll see if I can reproduce this using the information you provided. In the meantime, you might try temporarily disabling some of your other addons. You can also try enabling logging and checking for error messages that are logged in the console.

And just to be sure, you are using Dict 0.8.5, right?

      Hi

      Yeah, I'm using 0.8.5.

I'll run thru the other addons to see what is causing the issue. Almost
looks like something is blocking popup windows, but I don't think I have
anything that does that. It's odd.

      Anyway, thanks.

      C.

I can confirm the same behavior (blank Dict window opens, then closes). Using FF 50.0 and Dict 0.8.5 on Kubuntu 16.04.2.

I was able to reproduce this by installing AdBlock Plus 2.8.2. If I enable AdBlock Plus, the popup comes and goes. If I disable AdBlock Plus, the Dict popup remains visible.

I don't know if this has anything at all do to with Firefox 50.0.

Over the years, opening a window got harder and harder in Firefox. At some point, I had to resort to opening a window with a "data:" URI. The URI encodes the entire HTML of the page. It doesn't surprise me that AdBlock Plus would consider this to be an ad. I don't know of any other way to open a popup, though.

As a temporary work-around, you can use AdBlock Ultimate. I don't know anything about ad blocking extensions, but AdBlock Ultimate seems to be compatible with Dict.

I'll try to reach out ot the AdBlock Plus maintainers to determine if there's a way for the two extensions to co-exist.

I was able to reproduce this on FF 39 using AdBlock Plus 2.8.2 on SUSE Linux. I don't think it's related to the version of Firefox and instead it's entirely that AdBlock Plus is closing the window that Dict opens.

I got a tip from the AdBlock Plus Forum on how to work around the issue. Go to AdBlock's preferences and view the individual filters in "EasyList" and uncheck the following filter

    |data:text$popup

This will leave most of AdBlock Plus in-tact and let it permit the Dict popups.

For the sake of cross-referencing, the bug on AdBlock Plus is

The end result of all of the discussion on the adblockplus site and the easyfilter site is that it's possible for an extension to add an exception to the filter, effectively disabling the filter that's causing the problem. There's an extension VeeHD that has done this, although I don't know if it's done programmatically by the extension itself.

The filter to add is something like

    @@|data:text^$popup,domain=|

    or perhaps even more narrowly

    @@|data:text/html;charset=UTF-8^$popup,domain=|
