DEX Extensible Operating System / News: Recent posts

The source and floppy image of the DEX Extensbile Operating system has been released. This version is basically a bug fix and small enhancement release in preparation for the addition of the TCP/IP stack and the network PCI card drivers.

I will aim to port a complete Java VM and J2EE so that we can have the smallest J2EE container enabled OS :)

dex-os-kernel-1.035 is now released with a floppy image and the kernel source code.

Use your favorite floppy image writer (e.g. WINIMAGE, MAGICISO etc.) to dump the image to your floppy disk or mount it for use in bochs emulator.

The release contains peformance enhancements, source code clean-ups and a makefile for use with GNU make.

I am currently working on the dex-os project from time to time, expect a release soon. Here are the things that I am working on:

- core stability and fixes
- update of bootloader to GRUB 2.0
- support for the PCI bus and TCP/IP networking
- inclusion of a simple built-in Java VM into the kernel which can automatically execute .class files with a main method in it (This will be limited to System.* functions only).

A new floppy distribution of dex-os has just been released. It is based on the 1.033 kernel which contains fixes for many keyboard issues. It also contains an updated ramdisk driver. The tcc compiler is the same as the 1.02 release though and will still not link object files.

A new version of the dex-os kernel, it includes some minor and possibly major fixes. For the actual changes see the changelog for more info and a CVS diff if you want the exact change. If there are any bugs please notify me, either through the bug tracker or the forums.

The CVS version of the dex-os kernel (version 1.02+) is now available.

tcc 0.9.20 has already been ported to dex-os, it is only preliminary and it is still unable to link object files. A subset of the dex SDK is also included including a sample test program.

The floppy image (dex-os-1.02-img) is also updated to contain the full installation of tcc, the updated kernel as well as the source code of the *poor* text editor (dexedit). Have fun.
