Find in files (Ctrl+Shift+F) doesn't open the search dialog unless there is at least one file open in the edit window.

In the search menu it's the only option not greyed out when no file is open, but clicking it has no effect.

      Right.
I'm going to fix by disabling the option "Find in Files…"
Unless you think there's a some use case?

Well I think that's just a work around. As long as the project is open, you should be able to do a find in files without having a file open for editing. Surely.

Yes it is a work around.
Because, unfortunately, the search engine (with its regular expressions) is based on the editor.
Moreover, a few years ago (02-aug-2008), version 2.3.0.312 has fixed the bug [2121376] "Access violation while searching a text when no file is opened". (see menu Options/Check before Update)

Having said that, I'm going to close this ticket #287 ; however, I fully agree with you about a new feature request (two different means to the same end ;)
