Well I think that's just a work around. As long as the project is open, you should be able to do a find in files without having a file open for editing. Surely.

Yes it is a work around.
Because, unfortunately, the search engine (with its regular expressions) is based on the editor.
Moreover, a few years ago (02-aug-2008), version 2.3.0.312 has fixed the bug [2121376] "Access violation while searching a text when no file is opened". (see menu Options/Check before Update)
Having said that, I'm going to close this ticket #287 ; however, I fully agree with you about a new feature request (two different means to the same end ;)

Find in files (Ctrl+Shift+F) doesn't open the search dialog unless there is at least one file open in the edit window.
