You can force the template from the hosts file if need be.

I do this all the time with hardware that's the same, but I have different
requirements on what I'm monitoring.


My hosts file:
<host ip>  <host name> #snmp:model(Nortel;8600-vrrp)

My specs file:
vendor  : Nortel
model   : 8600-vrrp
snmpver :  2
sysdesc : Custom with vrrp template
