Upgrade from an old beta2 to an rc1 which has a relatively good chance of 
fixing the issue? I'd upgrade.

Are you able to walk the OIDs in question ? E.g.:

snmpwalk -v1 -c xxxxxx viking 1.3.6.1.2.1.2.2.1.2

If you can, you may want to try upgrading to the 0.3.0-rc1 release, a 
similar 
issue affecting Cisco ASA/PIXs was fixed by Francois.

Then you've got a similar setup as my problematic devmon node (both my devmon 
servers are running RHEL4).

I wonder if it's related to proxying. Are you running bbproxy for proxying?

My server that is experiencing the problem is running RH4 EL and is
acting as a proxy and forwarding on the data to localhost and another
server.

I am now knowingly doing any log rotation.

The init.d script does restart the processes fine and devmon begins
reporting again.

Well, I don't see this (on 2 instances that don't get restarted by
logrotate), 
but the report was for Solaris, and I don't currently run devmon on
Solaris 
(though I have a Solaris box I could run it on, but I'll need some
changes to 
get SNMP access to devices). People who do are free to provide more 
information that can assist in tracking the problem down.

I will try and take a look at this in the next week or so (if time
permits). 
However, the 0.3.0 release was intended to provide graphing support, and

since that is now (hopefully) more or less complete, I wanted to see
some 
testing of the Hobbit patch ...

But, the one experiencing this reports to one Hobbit bbproxy that reports to a 
hobbitd that is on the other side of a firewall. The other one is on the 
server running hobbitd (thus no firewall complications).

The other possibility may be due to log rotation (or, more difficult to track 
because of it).

I am now restarting devmon in the logrotate's postrotate script on the 
problematic devmon (since yesterday).

Well, '/etc/init.d/devmon restart' should do it ...

Well, I don't see this (on 2 instances that don't get restarted by logrotate), 
but the report was for Solaris, and I don't currently run devmon on Solaris 
(though I have a Solaris box I could run it on, but I'll need some changes to 
get SNMP access to devices). People who do are free to provide more 
information that can assist in tracking the problem down.

I will try and take a look at this in the next week or so (if time permits). 
However, the 0.3.0 release was intended to provide graphing support, and 
since that is now (hopefully) more or less complete, I wanted to see some 
testing of the Hobbit patch ...

[Devmon] Purple messages

I am also seeing purple reporting to hobbit. I had to implement a script
to search for the hung process and pkill and restart the devmon process.
I also tried upgrading to the new version of devmon and it's still doing
the same. I remember reading about a memory leak and was wondering why
that was skipped over in the new release?

I actually downloaded it and haven't experienced any issues.

The Cisco 5000 template (maybe 5500) appears to be mostly working for
my Cisco 4000 CatOS switch, and the 4500 is working for the Cisco 4000
IOS switch :)

Devmon 0.3.0-rc1 has been released, with a matching template release 
(20080206).

The notable changes from previous betas is an rrd collector for Hobbit, which 
should reduce the resource utilisation from collecting rrd data from Devmon. 
Additionally, a more comprehensive patch is available for Hobbit which 
improves some issues when using this method.

To use the collector module and patch, copy extras/do_devmon.c into 
hobbit-4.2.0/hobbitd/rrd, then cd into hobbit-4.2.0, and run:

patch -p1 < /path/to/devmon-0.3.0-rc1/extras/hobbit-4.2.0-devmon.patch

then run your build as usual. The rest is documented in docs/GRAPHING.

All other changes are documented in the CHANGELOG.

This is what I am using to ignore two blades of gigE on our 7613 (because we 
really do want to know if the ATM interfaces in it are down):

But say I want to disable Gigabit Ethernet 0/2 on a 2970 24 port switch.
The only way to disable that port on that 2970 is to disable any if_* column
that it falls under.  I haven't found a way for hobbit to distinguish
between items within the column.

I have a weathermap installation already setup and it is using the rrd
graphs from hobbit.  Just didn't know whether I would need to address the
hobbit side or devmon side on have a graph icon in its on the last column of
every interface.  That way when I am looking at Port Channel 1 I can just
look to the right and see all pertinent information.  And then if I want to
see a graph be able to click on an icon or something to that affect.  Would
make it a lot easier for viewing.

I have a similar problem with our 6 6509s (2 more waiting for power) and two 
7613s, e.g. one has 258 graphs (look for linecount= in the HTML).

Well, the thing is that the graphs are put in by Hobbit, not by devmon. As you 
may have noticed, I have already provided patches to Hobbit to correct some 
issues, and it may be possible to address some of these by patching Hobbit. 
I'll look and see if it is feasible to put in a pop-up graph (e.g. when 
mousing over the status icon for the interface in the table).

However, I was personally thinking of implementing a weathermap view (similar 
to the Cacti plugin).

devmon.  I saw a routermon page in hobbit that shows the columns like
if_stat, if_load...  And on the if_load page was a table just like the
devmon table except the page built by routermon had another column in the
table with a graph link in it.  So that when I click on a if_load page for
say my 6509 I don't get a page that is so long it isn't funny.   This is
what is in my 6509:

 

Slot 1 - 48 port 10/100/1000

Slot 2 - 48 port 10/100/1000 blade

Slot 3 - 10 GE module

Slot 4 - 10 GE module

Slot 7 - 48 port sfp module

Slot 8 - 48 port sfp module

graphing a lot of those ports because they are uplinks to switches and dwdm

The last problem I have now is the same issue regarding the rrd information 
(resulting in some rrd's not updating if there were duplicate repeaters as 
with ATM interfaces). Previously I was converting formats in the Hobbit rrd 
collector (which helped), but I removed that this morning.

I've dropped rrd lines which previously would have had a 'U' as a value, they 
will be logged if devmon is run with debugging.
