After retiring from corporate IT a few years ago, I haven't had a need for a fancy firewall or VPN. My wireless router does the job for my home network. However, if I did have the need I would probably build my own from a regular Linux distro. I'd also look closely at OpenBSD (if they are still active) to use instead of Linux since they are one of the few distro's I'm aware of that focuses on security. Another upside is there aren't as many vulnerabilities for BSD systems since they're not as popular. The downside is I'm not that familiar with BSD. And of course, there are always the commercial options for corporate networks.
