I stopped using this network card, so this is no longer a priority for me.

I now have security=user working with DOS 6.22 LAN clients, so there is a
good chance that Samba v4 will work with my setup (although I haven't tested
it).

 From my experience the key to getting Samba (v3.6.7) to work with
security=user for client connections which use 'MS LAN Manager' or
'Microsoft Network Client for DOS' or 'Workgroup Add-On for DOS' is to add
the following line to smb.conf in [global]:

min protocol = LANMAN2
