 As you already noticed, you ran out of memory, I guess updated DL uses 
 more (maybe just the kernel bloat?). I suggest you configure a swap 
 partition on your USB drive (if you have space there), should solve the 
 problem.

 O.K., I can do that.  However, I'll note that the current DL hardware
requirements (last updated for 1.4) suggest that DL will work on a swapless
32M 486.  It appears that's no longer true.
