Agreed about the downside of CD. Running from RAM sounds like a good 
option in some circs, but I guess you need about 500MB spare RAM, and 
the speed difference vs. USB is relatively unimportant for me. I guess 
that with system in RAM it is vulnerable to hacking (by a root user), 
though the hack would be lost on reboot?
