Hi Dominic, Before reading my emails I tried the (blindingly) obvious and ran install-on-usb without chrooting first and it seems to have worked. I did get a warning message from Debian that I was low on disk space which is highly unlikely because I am using an 512 MB CompactFlash. I've seen this before and believe it is some kind of partition problem but i don't remember exactly what I did to fix it. Anyway, thanks for your quick reply.
