Dear freshmeat.net subscriber, barsnick just announced version 7.0 of VMware on freshmeat.net. The changes are as follows: Several new operating systems are officially supported as guests and hosts. Support for Windows 7 and its Windows XP Mode was enhanced, including 3D graphics improvements. ESX 4.0 can now run as a guest OS. Virtual printing was introduced. VMs can now be secured with with AES256 encryption, and can be instantaneously paused. ALSA is now supported on Linux hosts. Virtual Disks can now be expanded and compacted. Drag and drop support was enhanced. Configuration of Virtual Networks is eased through a new editor, and IPv6 support was added. Virtual Disks can now be mounted using FUSE under Linux. Project description: VMware allows you to run 'virtual machines' inside a Linux host. It is not an emulator. It provides a virtual computer within the host which can boot whichever OS you decide to put on the filesystem image that is used as a harddrive. It will run DOS 6.22, Win 3.1, Win9x, WinNT/2000/XP/2003, Linux, Novell, and more. The only main requirement is a 400 MHz or better machine, along with lots of RAM (128M minimum, 256M recommended).
