Hi Moray, I could not make the floppy read-only on either ext3 (/vmimages) or block mode vmfs volume (which is san, scsi or iscsi). File mode vmfs volume (nfs) did work. As nfs worked you should be able to still have vMotion support for the vm as long as the ISO is also on shared storage. If you need more information or help on this I would suggest the forums over at www.vmware.com. Subject: Re: [Devil-Linux-discuss] Vmware virtual floppy disks It's stored on our storage box which is mounted through iSCSI on the esx box. As root on the esx box it shows as a regular file however. Thanks for checking it out. Subject: Re: [Devil-Linux-discuss] Vmware virtual floppy disks Hi Morey, I'm surprised, and disappointed, but will give it a go on my ESX box to see if I can get the floppy read only. I'll post back here as soon as its done. btw, do you store the flp file on the vmfs volume or ext3? Initial permissions were -rw------- We changed them to -r-------- and rebooted the instance but this did not work (!) I think I will have to live with this one... Subject: Re: [Devil-Linux-discuss] Vmware virtual floppy disks A floppy image for the config, not the ISO - this so that save-config can write back config info. One nice thing about using a physical floppy or write-protected USB on a physical DL instance was that even if you were to get hacked, unless someone physically had access then a reboot could cure most ills. Not that it happened to us, touch wood. I tried logging into the esx box and setting the permissions for the .flp file which is the disk image to u+r. But I was interested to note that when I ran save-config Vmware permitted overwrote my floppy image apparently ignoring the lack of any write permission! Bit scary!
