barsnick just announced version 5.01 of file on freshmeat.net.

The changes are as follows:

Major changes are CDF file parsing, indirect magic, and overhaul in MIME and
ASCII encoding handling. The file ~/.magic is now handled in addition to the
default magic file, not instead of it. A non-zero exit code is now emitted on
errors on any file, not just the last processed file. Magic definitions were
improved and expanded.

Project description:

File attempts to classify files depending on their contents and prints a
description if a match is found.
