Getting a bit OT, but definitely, mplayer will build without X11. I am
running mplayer as part of a music server on a hacked network hard drive
at home.

One problem you may run into with mplayer, is DL doesn't have any X
libraries.  I don't know if it's possible to build mplayer without X11.
