Yes, it's always a good idea to make a copy of the config for backup purposes.

I haven't done much with the install-on-usb script for a long, so I'm
probably not the best one to answer that question.

Personally I really like the "RUNFROMRAM=y" option.  (It takes an
extra quarter GB of memory, but memory is cheap)  That way the entire
CD is read into RAM upon initial bootup and then the system runs from
memory.  It takes longer to boot, but after that, the system is FAST
because it never has to go back to read the CD.
