Having both eth1 and your router's IP the same would explain the loss of connectivity given the fact than an IP conflict is created.2. Do I need to turn off DHCP on the router?You don't need to turn DHCP off on your WRT54G.  It's your choice whether you want your DL Box or your router to hand out IP's on the network.3. Why must I use a crossover cable from eth1 if I choose to go directly into my pc for testing purposes?The answer was covered quite well in another response.4. Does the crossover cable go from eth1 into the WAN port of the router?The cable should not go to the WAN port on your WRT since it will not be doing any actual routing.  Connect the cable to the switch part of your WRT.  In this case your WRT54G will act as a switch and possibly a DHCP server (if you so choose).I have the exact same setup at home.  Except DHCP is disabled on WRT, my DL box hands out addresses.  Hope this helps.
