I'm sorry for so late answer. I read the message thoroughly and I agree with
you, this feature is extremely useful. Also I'd like to note that serial console
support was realized in DL. It was done in the install-on-usb tool for grub
loader. I think it was done exactly for grub because it allows to change
settings easier. I think it's possible to add a menu for serial console
configuration for syslinux as a nice addition to grub but not sure about
unambiguous detecting of SOL port. As far as I am concerned the grub and
flash-drive are more attractive than cd-drive and syslinux. Maybe I'm wrong.

Anyway, your patches are welcome!
