I tried this but install-on-usb fails if running DL 1.2.x and trying to 
install DL 1.3.4-testing on USB, thus:

../syslinux: /lib/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.4' not found (required by 
./tmp-install2usb/iso-mnt/boot/syslinux/syslinux)
 ../syslinux: /lib/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.3.4' not found (required 
by ./tmp-install2usb/iso-mnt/boot/syslinux/syslinux)
Install failed!

It seems DL 1.2.x has glibc 2.3.2 which is not acceptable. So first you 
must get DL 1.3.x working from CD before installing on USB -which at 
present I can't. Catch 22.
