I am mystified why machine 3 hangs at a different point to 1, since they
are almost identical, except for slightly different CPU and memory.

Thank you for your efforts once again! I'm almost sure that #3 hangs due to
wrong ACPI support. So, if you add to kernel boot line "acpi=off" (maybe you
have to disable apic too - "acpi=off noapic") I expect successful booting. May I
ask you to check it? As regards of #1-2 - I have no idea, sorry. Maybe it's a
side effect of wrong acpi support as well, but basically, I don't know.

Latest progress:
Machine 1: I have no access to at present, will later try switching off
ACPI here and see if it works. I might also try your suggestion about
changing the kernel boot line.
Machine 2 [M810D (SiS740/962L)]: I switched off ACPI in BIOS then it
booted okay (at least it got to a question about installation media
rather than just hanging, then I aborted).
Machine 3 [M863G v1.5A (SiS741GX/963L)]: I switched off ACPI in BIOS
but it still crashed at same point with slightly different text
relating to ACPI. Looks like it was maybe not an ACPI issue for this
motherboard? See here: http://www.edendevelopments.co.uk/31122007044.jpg
