"Attempted to kill init" usually appears after chrooting attempt if root
filesystem is not mounted or mounted incorrectly.
I guess it's a crash in initrd stage ( but upgrade-config starts from main system).
However, I associable myself with Heiko's question: Dom, what messages have you
seen just before kernel panic?
