The memtest86 has run right through once without showing any errors. I
have a photo of the boot screen for 1.3.4 at the point of hang, but I
guess I can't post it here? The text near the bottom reads:

but there is lots of stuff above this. Hope this makes some sense to
you, let me know if you want to see the screen image? 
 
It wouldn't have anything to do with the fact that I am running i586
version on an Athlon-based PC? (Normally I use i686-SMP.)
