Heiko Zuerker wrote: Howdy folks, I uploaded new
1.2.15 and 1.3.4 testing releases to the FTP server. 1.3 now finally
includes grsecurity. Take a look and let me know if you find any
problems. I am presently using 1.2.10-i686-SMP. I
tried with the new 1.3.4-i586-2007-12-27 but at boot time I got this ugly
message: Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init! And the
computer hung. Sorry I didn't write down the earlier messages but I could
have another go if it would help. I rebooted with the 1.2.10-i686-SMP CD
and all was well again (including my heart rate!) OK that's
not good. Yes please try to catch the message before the kernel panic.
Does it tell you why it panics? How much RAM do you have in the box?
Hi Heiko &amp; Bruce:
I have 256MB (grep MemTotal /proc/meminfo reports 223296 kB). I have had
no previous problems (since I last had a failing hard disk), so I don't
think there is a hardware issue.
I can't access the machine for another 3 hours since it is in constant
use (as our Samba server). When the office has quietened down I will try
again with 1.3.4 and see what the earlier messages are. If I have time I
will try with the MS Memory Diagnostic CD as well.

DL has a boot option for a memory test too.

Thanks, how do I use that? Does it operate exclusively or can other
processes run as well?<br>
