Sounds like your /etc/ntp/drift file contains some bad value! It contains=
 the
latest estimate of clock frequency error. So try to delete it ...

Thanks for the suggestion - I stopped ntp, deleted the drift file and set t=
he=20
correct time again with ntpdate - all appears to be running correctly now (=
at=20
least for the last few hours).
