Hello, Until now I used FloppyFW as a firewall. Because Devil-Linux offers more services, I am trying to get DL 1.2.14 running, but without succes: During boot-process I get following error: "Unable to handle kernel paging request at virtual address C4000000" The funny thing is, I tried on 2 different PC's: - Pentium 75 / 133 MHz with 64 Mb RAM - Celeron 400 MHz with 64 Mb RAM Exactly the same message appears on both computers.! I ran memtest86 on both computers => 0 errors Could someone please help me out, Many thanks, Eddy Morlion |

I need to create a print server, and it looks like DL will not work since it doesn't contain cups. Would it be a lot of work to add cups? (I'll do the work, provided it's not a major pain). Just got my DL firewall up and running (thanks to you all!) and to be honest with you I am not sure what to do next (extreme DL newb here!), I wanted to see it in action so to speak so I set the NTOP service to run at bootup but not sure what to do after that? It seems to fail? Again let me be clear, I am a Linux newbie so go easy on me. I just want to see what is going on in real time. On a side note, I am using PuTTY to gain access to this box. Thanks for all your help in getting this DL newb up and running, your instructions where spot on! From: su...@ho...: dev...@li...: Mon, 14 Jul 2008 06:13:30 +0000Subject: Re: [Devil-Linux-discuss] Basic setup issues. 1. That address is obviously the same as my router? It is necessary for you to change the internal IP of your WRT54G. Having both eth1 and your router's IP the same would explain the loss of connectivity given the fact than an IP conflict is created.2. Do I need to turn off DHCP on the router? You don't need to turn DHCP off on your WRT54G. It's your choice whether you want your DL Box or your router to hand out IP's on the network.3. Why must I use a crossover cable from eth1 if I choose to go directly into my pc for testing purposes? The answer was covered quite well in another response.4. Does the crossover cable go from eth1 into the WAN port of the router? The cable should not go to the WAN port on your WRT since it will not be doing any actual routing. Connect the cable to the switch part of your WRT. In this case your WRT54G will act as a switch and possibly a DHCP server (if you so choose).I have the exact same setup at home. Except DHCP is disabled on WRT, my DL box hands out addresses. Hope this helps. From: sco...@ho...: dev...@li...: Sun, 13 Jul 2008 21:16:13 -0400Subject: Re: [Devil-Linux-discuss] Basic setup issues. I've had problems on systems running off a CDR when the media gets a film on it over time and the system cannot read the CD any longer. See if there are any CD read errors in `dmesg' or from syslog. (this is why I always set the RUNFROMRAM option) Or you could run the mkdir command with strace to see where it's failing. 'strace mkdir /var/...'. - BS |

I'm trying to join a DL 1.3 box to an AD domain for the first time and my first impression was DL doesn't contain kerberos since none of the commands are in the default $PATH. Then I found that the binaries are in /usr/bin/krb5/ and /usr/sbin/krb5/. On Ubuntu and CentOS (and probably others), the kerberos binaries reside in /usr/[s]bin/. Why does DL have them in their own directories? Is it because a few kerberos'ied binaries conflict with their regular counterparts (ftp, telnet, rcp, rlogin, rsh)?. Should we move (or link?) the rest of the krb5 binaries into the regular /usr/[s]bin/ PATH? On a side note, I remember Heiko replying to people who ask about telnetd in DL; it's not included because it's not secure. The correct answer is the kerberos'ized telnetd is here: /usr/sbin/krb5/telnetd, which does unencrypted plain text logins too (just tested it). ;-) - BS |

Hi, I was going to try installing 1.3 but I ran into a little problem. There is no etc-modd.tar.bz2 to add when building CF. And therefore I can not set the security settings for Serial access. In /etc/inittab Enable S0:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -L 115200 ttyS0 vt102 In /etc/securetty Add ttyS0 ttyS1 I don't know if I can use an old etc, but I can probably create one by booting on another computer. 1. That address is obviously the same as my router? It is necessary for you to change the internal IP of your WRT54G. Having both eth1 and your router's IP the same would explain the loss of connectivity given the fact than an IP conflict is created. 2. Do I need to turn off DHCP on the router? You don't need to turn DHCP off on your WRT54G. It's your choice whether you want your DL Box or your router to hand out IP's on the network. 3. Why must I use a crossover cable from eth1 if I choose to go directly into my pc for testing purposes? The answer was covered quite well in another response. 4. Does the crossover cable go from eth1 into the WAN port of the router? The cable should not go to the WAN port on your WRT since it will not be doing any actual routing. Connect the cable to the switch part of your WRT. In this case your WRT54G will act as a switch and possibly a DHCP server (if you so choose). I have the exact same setup at home. Except DHCP is disabled on WRT, my DL box hands out addresses. Hope this helps. From: sco...@ho... To: dev...@li... Hi, > Thanks for your response, I have set eth1 to the 192.168.1.1. I have a > couple of questions. > > 1. That address is obviously the same as my router? The router, being downstream of devil, should get its address via DHCP. However, it might be expecting the net upstream of it to begin with 192.168.0 > 2. Do I need to turn off DHCP on the router? I'm speculating, but I don't think that's the problem. > 3. Why must I use a crossover cable from eth1 if I choose to go directly > into my pc for testing purposes? (At least one question that I am familiar with.) Normal, 100 Mbps eth uses 2 pairs of wires (only 4 of the 8 wires on the CAT 5 are used). It was designed for one port to be on the upstream side & one on the downstream side. To connect 2 ports that were physically designed both as "downstream" or both as upstream ports (for instance, 2 ports on the backs of computers), we need a "crossover" cable, which simply has the 2 active wire pairs crossed over. Some eth receivers are electronically smart enough to figure out and compensate for the presence or absence of a crossover cable, so a crossover cable may not truly be required. The gigabit eth spec requires symmetric negotiation (like the "intelligence"), so crossover cables are not needed. > 4. Does the crossover cable go from eth1 into the WAN port of the router? Yes. From devil into the WAN port. Might possibly need a crossover cable here. > I realize some of these questions may seem quite silly, but I am quite new > to all of this. Thanks again. I normally use a simple hub in place of a router. <<<< I've daisy chained (simple home-use wireless-style) routers, but not often. Can you connect a XP or Vista machine directly into devil? Try it even if you don't have a crossover, it might work. It might work on one machine & not on another. One of my 2 laptops has a smart eth port. You won't do physical damage by misusing a crossover, the connection will merely not happen. Do you have a crossover cable? It is useful to have 1 around for sanity's sake. Hang in there. One nice thing about devil is that once it is set up, it will hopefully need nothing else. Chip |

I'm a newbie, but I'll put in my 2 cents. I needed to set the IP address from setup eth1 Configuration menut to 192.168.1.1 (I believe the default is 192.168.1.255 or .254). For me, XP seemed to need this value; I think linux is more robust. The WRT54G may be sensitive. Can you connect one of your Vista or XP machines directly to the DL box? It's prolly easier to troubleshoot with Vista or XP, than thru a router. Good luck. Trying to get Devil-Linux running as a firewall on my home network, I have the cards and modules configured however once I setup eth0 to my cable modem and eth1 (using crossover) to my WRT54G I loose all connection. I am running Vista and XP on my network. _________________________________________________________________ Making the world a better place one message at a time. http://www.imtalkathon.com/?source=EML_WLH_Talkathon_BetterPlace |
