problem WinXP editing in Dev-C++ spaces appear

Installed latest version of Dev-C++ on a Windows XP SP3 pc.
When I try to write code strange spaces appear in line and > characters appear where they shouldn't be.
Pls if anybody knows something about how to fix this I will appreciate it.
