For the future readers of this thread:

The 4 series has not been maintained in over 6 years. Few people use it.
If you are using it, you are, for better or worse, essentially "on your
        own"

If you are staying with the 4 series because you have code that only
compiles under gcc-2.95 - well, you will have to come up to 1997 standards
        SOME time. BIG ;)

Why would you prever version 4 over version 5 (or rather 4.9.9.2). It is not a good choice and is packages with an ancient version of GCC (2.95) which has poor support for ISO C++ (because it was released before the standard).

Morover you will find it hard to get support here, we will always tell you to upgrade first. And installing version 4 with the intention of upgrading later can itself cause problems. Incompatible version 4 configuration files will be retained unless you know what you are doing, and version 4 project files are imcompatible. Even libraries and DevPaks installed for version 4 (if you can find them) will not be compatible with teh newer compiler. Your plan will cause more unnecessary work for yourself, and probably us when you ask us to fix the problem!
