    (1) Run the uninstall program...called uininstall in the dev-c++ directory. Do not go to Start:Control Panel:Add or Remove Programs - directly run the program in the Dev directory
    (2) Delete the Dev directory
    (3) Find and remove devcpp.ini and devcpp.cfg. In Windows 9x this is easy, they are in the Dev directory. For the other Windows - 2000, XP, NT - it is a little harder, as they are placed in a directory that Windows calls hidden. On this computer, the are in:

    c:\documents and settings\username\local settings\application data

You can find them with Windows search, if you remember to click the box that says look in hidden folders. It is VITAL that these files be removed, as they contain information about your current install. If this information is still there when you re-install, it can foul things up again. Please, if you have XP, 2000 etc., the files ARE there. Do not answer that the files were not on my machine.
    (4) Restart
    (5) Re-download the full Dev installation from the web site
    (6) Install Dev, preferably where it wants to go, usuallly c:\dev-cpp, but definitely NOT in a directory with spaces in its name, like "Program Files" or "My Documents"

A final note: You are best off establishing a directory like c:\mycstuff and writing and saving stuff there. Don't save your programs in a directory with spaces in them either.

When you are asked to do a series of steps like outlined in the post above to fix a problem, remember:

If you are still having the problem afterwards, please report, step by step, what you did - you might even want to use the numbers from above. Be far more complete than "I did what you asked"

The reason I state this is that on many occasions, folks simply respond with, "I did what you asked, and it still didn't work", and then, after several more posts, you find out something like "I couldn't find those files, so I skipped that step", or "I went to Cotrol Panel:Add or remove programs, but there was nothing there for Dev", ot the famous "I deleted the Dev directory first, how do I uninstall" One guy I told 3 seperate times that devcpp.ini and devcpp.cfg were in hidden folders, and how to find them. When he finally found them, he asked why I had not told him they were in hidden folders.
Take your time, do it right, report what you did.

I tried to do those steps.  I uninstalled it and then it said for me to go to where the directory was and remove that.  I went to where it was and I could delete everything except the application called "devcpp Dev-C++IDE".  The message I get when I try to delete it is: "Cannot delete devcpp:Access is Denied / Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use"  What should I do next?

    • Nobody/Anonymous

I am adding on to my above message:

First, run uninstall.exe from the Dev-cpp folder. Delete the Dev-Cpp folder

These are the directions I tried to follow when uninstalling the Dev-Cpp program but it won't let me delete the Dev-cpp folder.  I always get a message that says that access is denied.  What should I do now?

What are the permissions on the directory?  What are your permissions as a user?

Have you tried to do the delete right after boot-up, i.e. when you are pretty sure nothing is running?

It also would help to know what OS you are running.

I have no idea what permissions i have. I will try to delete it right after boot-up.  What do you mean by OS?  I'm sorry I just don't know too much about computers.

first of all, i have no such directory on my windows2000 (i only got as far as c:\documents and settings\username, no such (or i didnt find) 'local settings\application data' (unless im a dork))

second, no such (or i didnt find) choice of 'hidden files' in my windows2000 search, (though there is 'search subfolders' which didnt produce devcpp.ini or devcpp.cfg either)

The reason you are not seeing the directory called

      "Local Settings"

is that it is a hidden folder.  You can set your windows explorer up to show such folders by going to

      Control Panel:Folder Options:Folder Options:View

There is an option there to make hidden folders visible.

that can be devcpp.ini if explorer is set to hide extensions for "known file types"
and yes, it is retarded.. I mean set up this way, by default

I have three versions of DevCpp installed, 8.0, 8.5, and 8.7. The only uninstall I have is the one for 8.0. How do I uninstall 8.5 and 8.7?

DL the program attempted to install and got the message "C:\DOCUME~1\Me\Desktop\DEVCPP~1.EXE
The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction,
CS:0541 IP:0119 OP:65 63 74 20 61 Choose 'Close' to terminate the application" when I choose ignore it goes on to say the same thing but with the following changes
      "CS:0541 IP:011a OP: 63 74 20 61 20"
When I attempted to just delete the program I get the message "Cannot delete dvcpp4990setup: it is being used by another user or program close any programs that might be using the file and try again.I rebooted and tried again..and got the same response, attempted to rename it and was not allowed to do that either. I'm the administrator so I should'nt have any problems with permissions. I NEED this for my programming class so if you could help me out I would appreciate it

Have you tried to re-download the dev setup program, and run it from someplace other than your desktop? (I run mine from my c:\xfer)

p.s. This thread is an informational thread, I encourage you in case like this to start your own thread, it really helps the process. Thanks

I answered your question on the thread you started on this question. Please do not ask the same question on multiple threads and please do NOT repost.

When you do a clean uninstall, you delete all the Dev-Packs you have installed. The project you are trying to compile links the winbgi library which is NOT included in the basic Dev release, it is in one of the Dev-Packs. Your error is actually fairly clear if you read it and think about it. It says "cannont find -lbgi" - that means it is telling you "I don't have any library by that name that I can find"
