I accidentally installed the beta version of dev cpp 5.0 beta over an existing installation of the same version . And now it's generating errors during compile time. I also deleted the registry entries of the previous installation and start of with a fresh new installation and still the same problem. can anyone help and explain this phenomenon?

Have you tried following all the steps in the thread "Read This Before Asking A Question" under how to do an uninstall/delete/reinstall?

      They look something like this:

      The uninstall/delete/reinstall dance

      (1) Run the uninstall program...called uniinstall in the dev-c++ directory. Do not go to Start:Control Panel:Add or Remove Programs - directly run the program in the Dev directory
      (2) Delete the Dev directory
      (3) Find and remove devcpp.ini and devcpp.cfg. In Windows 9x this is easy, they are in the Dev directory. For the other Windows - 2000, XP, NT - it is a little harder, as they are placed in a directory that Windows calls hidden. On this computer, the are in:

      c:\documents and settings\username\local settings\application data

You can find them with Windows search, if you remember to click the box that says look in hidden folders. It is VITAL that these files be removed, as they contain information about your current install. If this information is still there when you re-install, it can foul things up again. Please, if you have XP, 2000 etc., the files ARE there. Do not answer that the files were not on my machine.
      (4) Restart
      (5) Re-download the full Dev installation from the web site
      (6) Install Dev, preferably where it wants to go, usuallly c:\dev-cpp, but definitely NOT in a directory with spaces in its name, like "Program Files" or "My Documents"

A final note: You are best off establishing a directory like c:\mycstuff and writing and saving stuff there. Don't save your programs in a directory with spaces in them either.

When you are asked to do a series of steps like outlined in the post above to fix a problem, remember:

If you are still having the problem afterwards, please report, step by step, what you did - you might even want to use the numbers from above. Be far more complete than "I did what you asked"

The reason I state this is that on many occasions, folks simply respond with, "I did what you asked, and it still didn't work", and then, after several more posts, you find out something like "I couldn't find those files, so I skipped that step", or "I went to Cotrol Panel:Add or remove programs, but there was nothing there for Dev", ot the famous "I deleted the Dev directory first, how do I uninstall" One guy I told 3 seperate times that devcpp.ini and devcpp.cfg were in hidden folders, and how to find them. When he finally found them, he asked why I had not told him they were in hidden folders.
Take your time, do it right, report what you did.

Question. If i were to reinstall it over an existing installation with the same folder name as the previous installation it generates some kind of error which has to do with executing the executable.but why is that? For that matter the lib / bin directories is the same with the previous installation . Is the problem generated during runtime ? rather than compile time? and why is it that it generates the executing error if the libraries are linked properly to the program?
just curious. because from what i realized dev cpp 4.0 didn't have such issues

after further reading the docs finally found out that i need to delete physical files in my windows user application data folder.
      thanks anyway.

      :-)

Notice that that is a step in the procedure above.  Please take some time and peruse the thread, "Read This Before Asking A Question", there is some really good information in there...and the stuff *I* put in.   ;-)

I have not done what I *think* you are asking myself. I do know that historically, when major new releases have come out in the 5 series code (like going from 4.9.6.x to 4.9.7.x), the installations have always indicated that we should uninstall/delete the old installation before installing the new one...

One other bit of unrelated trivia is that in the 4.9.8.x series, the update process changed from VUpdate to WebUpdater...

None of that babbling provides any answer worth a flip to your question...
